The price is around $330 for the pair. That sounds like a lot until you price a rack of fixed dumbbells to 50 pounds, which runs $600 and up and takes over a room.
The complaint about the winner
The shape. PowerBlocks are square cages, and your hand sits inside the frame. Some exercises (curls, anything where the dumbbell touches your body) feel awkward at first, and the frame limits how far you can rotate your wrist. Most owners adapt in a couple of weeks; some never do. Also, the pin selector is quick but not one-second quick.
The convenient alternative
Bowflex SelectTech 552s, around $350, use a dial on each end and feel closest to a normal dumbbell in your hand. Weight changes are the fastest of any design. The trade is plastic: the housing, the dial, and the plate shells. r/GarageGym's phrasing is that "people do question the long-term durability because of the plastic-heavy design," and the threads are full of cracked shells and dials that stop engaging after two or three years. Bowflex offers a two-year warranty. Don't drop them. Ever. Also note: they top out at 52.5 pounds with no expansion path.
Why not the others
- NÜOBELL 550 (around $600): the nicest to use, with a twist-handle selector and a slim steel shape. Also nearly twice the price, hard-capped at 50 pounds, and users report the selector mechanism can jam if the plates aren't seated exactly right in the cradle.
- Ironmaster Quick-Lock (around $700 with rack): probably the most durable of all and drop-safe, but slow to change and the most expensive.
- Amazon-brand spin-lock sets (around $100 to $150): they work, they're loud, and changing weight takes a full minute per dumbbell. Fine if you do one exercise at a time and never supersets.
Which one for you
You'll lift for years and want to go past 50 pounds: PowerBlock Elite EXP. You want the fastest changes and a normal dumbbell feel, and you're careful with equipment: Bowflex 552. Budget is under $150: a spin-lock set and patience.
